The energy systems of single-family homes offer enormous potential for the energy transition. Household-related flexibilities save costs and relieve the burden on the power grid.

Consolinno therefore conducted a simulation to investigate the extent to which consumers can benefit from investing in their energy systems and providing flexibilities for the power grid. Four different scenarios were examined in which the Leaflet HEMS optimizes the energy system with forecast-based schedules.

The investment in the provider-independent, compatible Leaflet HEMS energy manager pays for itself after just 0.8 to 1.5 years of operation, depending on which additional components—such as a PV system and battery storage—are installed. The cost savings compared to systems with a simple controller range between €14,700 and €26,600 over the lifetime of the energy system (25 years).

These significant savings illustrate the real added value for end customers that is created by upgrading the energy system. Introducing the flexibility of the domestic energy system into the power grid is also financially worthwhile. In addition, intelligent energy management through Leaflet HEMS increases the degree of self-sufficiency by 8 to 18%.

In the simulation, Consolinno assumed the following energy system:

The assumption was made that an average household in a single-family home (renovated old building) has two electric cars, a wall box (7,800 kWh/a; approx. 24,000 km/a at 20 kWh/100km) and a heat pump (7,000 kWh/a). Additional electricity requirements amount to 4,000 kWh/a, with total heating requirements of 25,000 kWh/a.

The scenarios add further components to the existing energy system. In the four scenarios, the system is always expanded by the Leaflet HEMS and grid-friendly control in accordance with Section 14a of the German Energy Industry Act (EnWG). Depending on the scenario, combinations of a 15 kWp PV system, a 10 kWh battery storage system, and/or a dynamic electricity tariff are considered.

  • Scenario 1: Wallbox, heat pump + PV system
  • Scenario 2: Wallbox, heat pump + PV system + battery storage
  • Scenario 3: Wallbox, heat pump + battery storage + dynamic tariff
  • Scenario 4: Wallbox, heat pump + PV system + battery storage + dynamic tariff

The battery system already regulates itself to increase self-consumption. The Leaflet HEMS further optimizes this through driving schedules. As a result, the savings achieved by the HEMS in the scenarios with batteries are lower than in scenario 1.

The results of the simulation are transparent and comprehensible, and are presented in the following graphs.
