Klaus Nagl, physicist, inventor, and founder of Consolinno Energy and SmartQ Energy Solutions, has transformed his home into a living laboratory for sustainable energy management. Using innovative technologies, he demonstrates how the homes of the future can already be designed today to be efficient, self-sufficient, and cost-effective.
A home as a testing ground for innovations
In his own home, Nagl combines state-of-the-art energy systems such as heat pumps, PVT collectors, and storage systems into an intelligent overall concept. At the heart of this is the Home Energy Management System (HEMS), which has been expanded with the newly developed source manager. This feature controls various heat sources—from geothermal energy to PVT modules to ice storage—so efficiently that the heat pump's efficiency has been improved by 15%.
The source manager will be available in the future as an add-on for households with multiple heat sources and storage systems. The goal is to optimize the use of energy sources and bring households one step closer to self-sufficiency.

"Our solution goes beyond mere cost reductions," explains Nagl. "We actively contribute to grid stability by dynamically adjusting both energy consumption and feed-in to the grid."
Over 20 years, households can save up to 16 tons of CO₂ emissions and €11,020. The system also impresses with its low ecological footprint—the global warming potential (GWP) is only 32.4 kilograms of CO₂ equivalent for the entire life cycle.
FlexA and the source manager: Perfect coordination
"The system automatically recognizes which source can be used most efficiently and when—whether for heating in winter or cooling in summer," says Nagl. This flexibility enables households to become more independent from the power grid while making optimal use of energy sources.
